Since the finalisation of the retaining wall 1932, the well-preserved Sainte-Barbe point was discovered. This headland has a stunning view of the bay and the flysch cliffs. In 1870, the French public organisation for lighthouses and beacons (Service public des Phares et Balises) erected a forward leading light on the site of an old chapel and on the ruins of a small 17th century fort. The lighthouse’s unusual profile and whiteness is inextricably linked to Sainte-Barbe. The area is dotted with old blockhouses, a testimony to the Atlantic Wall defence system built by Nazi Germany.
