Designated as a historical monument in 1925.

An unmissable sight in the port, this house was built by the rich ship-owner and privateer Joannot de Haraneder in the 1640s and has an unusual architectural style for Saint-Jean-de-Luz. An impressive building, the Joanoenia House stands out with its corner turrets, its ancient monumental door and its façade alternating cut stones and bricks in a trompe-l’oeil style. However, the noble character of the Joanoenia House mustn’t make one forgets the primary function of the building i.e. port activities, as attests its watchtower, its tunnels as well as its discreet sea inspired graffiti. In 1660, the house welcomed in its fastuous apartments (including a monumental fireplace and painted ceilings) the Queen Mother, Anne of Austria, and the bride-to-be, the Spanish Infanta Maria-Theresa of Spain, for the famous royal wedding, hence its later being referred to as the “House of the Infanta”.
