From the 14th century, there was a wooden bridge with mobile arches crossing the Nivelle River. It went from Place de la Tour d’Auvergne (Auvergne Tower Square) in Ciboure to the current Rue Gambetta in Saint-Jean-de-Luz. Just before the French Revolution of 1789, a stone bridge was built upstream from Saint-Jean-de-Luz to the Récollets peninsula. Then in 1844, a new stone bridge was built upstream from the Récollets cloister, in order to enlarge the dock. In 1864, a railway bridge was built even further upstream, which closed the fishing harbour on the Nivelle River side, and, in 1962, the present Pont Charles de Gaulle (Charles de Gaulle Bridge) was built nearby.
