Unveiled in 1884, the covered market was designed by an architect from Bayonne, Louis Dubourthoumieu-Lavergne. It is at the heart of the modern town which emerged from 1864 with the building of the train station. The building, which reflects the great interests in hygiene at the time and was inspired by the style of the French architect Victor Baltard (famous for designing various covered markets in Paris), is organised around its metal framework. The elegant design combines stones from the Larrun mountain and from the town of Crazannes (in the department of Charente-Maritime), white and red bricks from the city of Bayonne, glasswork and cast iron elements from the town of Fumel. At the beginning of the 20th century, the covered market was enlarged with the addition of an Art Deco pavilion designed by the architect Gélos, where nowadays the fishers’ stalls can be found.
