Ciboure became an autonomous town in 1603, at the expense of the lord of the Urtubie Castle, and subsequently grew rapidly. In the 18th century, the wharf was built, and this was followed by the building of houses with gable roofs and corbelled constructions. From 1924 until 1937, the wharf was enlivened by a tram that linked Bayonne to Hendaye. In August 1930, in the presence of the composer Maurice Ravel, born in the town of Ciboure, the wharf was christened “Quai Ravel” (Ravel Wharf). The characteristic outline of the port buildings, implanted on an ancient structure, creates a strong architectural identity.
