In front of the port, at the end of the historical road, the main square has been the opening to the port and its activities since the Middle Ages. Until towards the end of 19th century, a market was found at the centre of the square but, in 1883, a bandstand was built, emphasizing leisure activities over commercial activities. The must-see square is bordered by imposing ship-owner houses and, as it was forever marked by the passing of the royal cortege in 1660, it logically took on the name of its illustrious guest. The Place Louis XIV is the natural place for Saint-Jean-de-Luz inhabitants to meet and is also one of the main hubs for all the festivities.
